到2014年，美国《葡萄酒观察家》（wine spectator/ws）年度百大葡萄酒排行榜已走过了26年的历程。1988年，《葡萄酒观察家》从约3,000款*新上市的葡萄酒中遴选出100款形成了当年度百大葡萄酒名单，这100款酒主要是来自法国、意大利和美国加州。而到了2014年，《葡萄酒观察家》依旧按照质量（评分）、价值（价格）、可得性（根据葡萄酒的产量或者输入美国的数量）以及“x-因素”（兴奋度）的标准进行选择，但其范围却已扩大到了18,000多款新上市葡萄酒，产地也遍布世界14个国家。
